ganoderic acid
Commonly known as Reishi or Lingzhi, this is a polypore basidiomycete that grows saprophytic on hardwood logs or stumps and produces a woody fruiting body with the surface having a red varnished appearance. It is considered rare and hard to find in nature in China and Japan, but is now commonly cultured. The fugnus has been attributed with a range of beneficial effects including immunomodulation, anti-cancer activity, enhancing longevity and used in traditional Chinese medicine since the first Chinese emperor. Biologically active compounds from fungal extracts are being characterized and for example the hypoglycaemic effect in mice have been attributed to two glycans and polysaccharides of G. lucidum.
